VSCO Artist Iniative
I was awarded the VSCO Artist Initiative in 2016 to further my personal project around a modern dance group in Cartagena, Colombia which is changing the landscape around the long-term effects of Colonialism.
“Colombia is the second largest Afro-descendant population in Latin America behind Brazil and Cartagena specifically was a large slave port during colonial times. It is estimated that over 1.1 million captive Africans entered the docks at Cartagena. Today, the Afro-Colombian population remains the majority and yet even after so many years removed from colonial times, discrimination is a part of every day life. ”
